What is a Medical Review Officer or MRO?
A medical review officer, or MRO (used in drug testing) is: a medical professional, most likely a licensed physician,will review a confirmed positive drug-test results from a drug testing laboratory.
The MRO is responsible for contacting the person who tested positive to inquire about and obtain any possible prescription or over-the-counter medications which may have caused a positive test result (proof of prescriptions are provided by the individuals doctor or pharmacy).
The MRO will have knowledge of substance-abuse disorders and the appropriate medical training in order to interpret and evaluate a positive test results, together with an individual’s history and any other relevant medical information.
A Medical Review Officer should carry some form of national certification such as the one provided by the Medical Review Officer Certification Council Website
